Chronicle of Rewarding Experience

Viswash has been incepted in year 2006. Viswash during its 10 long years of existence made contribution to Water and Sanitation Sector here in Bihar directly or through its members. Some noteworthy contribution to the sector is as follows:
  • Viswash was incepted in Year 2006 by Leading CSOs in sanitation sector with a vision: “Be together for Water & Sanitation Secure Bihar.
  • Viswash had has been patronised by lead international agency: GSF
  • Viswash supported Government of Bihar in its massive awareness campaingn i.e. Gram Gaurav Yatra led by PHED Bihar in year 2008 . It produced IEC materials used under the yatra, also advertised message on sanitation and deployed a folk media team which accompanied the yatra all along.
  • VISWASH along with water Aid took initiative to advocate for state water and sanitation policy in year 2010 which under review by the state.
  • Reached out different corners of Bihar that resulted into emergence of new organizations in water and sanitation sector.
  • Initiating discourse on Water and Sanitation as basic human right and facilitated law maker (MLAs) take part in South Asian conference on Right to sanitation at Kathmandu. They are furthering the learning by sharing information among peer group and propagating message at different forum.
  • Linkages and collaboration along with reputed agencies like GSF, water Aid, FANSA, PHED helped in concerted action pertaining to water and sanitation in Bihar.
  • Conducted State Consultations on themes like Role of Civil Society organizations in Water and Sanitation sector in Bihar / Issues and resolutions etc. Such consultations were blessed by important dignitaries. People endorsed VISWASH's recommendation for a greater role of CSOs in Water and Sanitation programs.
  • VISWASH and its members took emergency preparedness works in around 70 villages across six flood affected north Bihar districts through which drinking water and sanitation facilities were made available during flood. Hygiene kit had also been given to each village.
  • VISWASH had launched a state wide campaign with Ministry of Disaster Management, Government of Bihar on emergency preparedness. Audio-video spots and newspaper advertisements were jointly displayed on all major media vehicles. It resulted into emergence of new players in sanitation activities in disaster prone areas.
  • Conducted intensive campaign on Right to sanitation inaugurated by Minister of PHED resulted into rising of more interest group in favor of the campaign.
  • Conducted several seminar and workshops for Capacity building of member organization. Augmented capacity helped in improved water and sanitation response by member organization.
  • Accelerated engagement of Media resulted into more frequent sanitation reporting.VISWASH mobilized schools of Bihar with due support of Department of Education -GoB, and made Global safe hand wash day as a important learning event for children.
  • Rally & Meeting on Global Safe Hand wash day: Viswash Bihar in collaboration of GSF Bihar project jointly celebrated Global Safe Hand Wash Day in Patna. The event was also graced by Hon’ble minister-Rural Development, Bihar. A rally of school children was organised from Sahid Smarak to R Block Golumbar for spreading message of safe hand wash day.
  • Viswash Coordinated a study on Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) related grassroot level issues (focused to NBA -Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment guarantee scheme (MNREGS) convergence ) in Bihar State.
  • Viswash mobilsed Partner to help state led massive IEC campaign (Swachata Utasav) during 20-25 Feb, 2014. The partners engaged hundreds of volunteers and their workers to reach in remote village and spread message of ODF/NBA

Viswash & its member celebrated World Sanitation day 2013. Viswash organized state level advocacy workshop for pupularising the auspicious UN day on Sanitation i.e. World Sanitation day 2014. The topic of the workshop was Means and Ways of Maximizing Participation of Civil Society Organisations in implementation of Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan in Bihar. The event was inaugurated by Hon’ble Deputy Chairman-Bihar Vidhan Parishad- Mr.Salim Parwez. Total 161 people from cross section of society including Panchayti Raj, Leading Media houses (Aaj, Prabhat Khabar, ETV Bihar, DD News etc.) and Education & training took part in the advocacy workshop.

VISWASH assisted GSF Project through facilitation in smooth conduct of a Survey on Sanitation facilities in villages of Bihar. VISWASH mobilsed members for necessary facilitation in the Sanitation Survey In line of its advocacy and sensitization activity VISWASH Bihar organized an informative Seminar during December 2013 on Mineral Contamination in ground water which had been a neglected area of our decision makers. The Seminar was held at BVHA conference hall in Patna on 30th December 2013. Around 38 representatives from Civil Society Organization, Panchayati Raj, Research and education took part in the seminar. Presentation followed by panel discussion was dominant method of sharing of information throughout the seminar.
